This sailed through the (virtual) transom this afternoon whilst I was making up for not sleeping during the previous 30 or so hours:
Today we are excited to announce Pledges, an easy new way for readers to support your work. Pledges help writers build confidence that readers love and value their writing, and that they could succeed with a subscription model. We started rolling out Pledges in December, and the feature is available to all writers today.
Yeah, well … to my mind, anyone who reads one of these blaghs supports my work. Simple as that. As far as confidence goes, well … I used to play middle linebacker, and I’ve been a musician for going on 56 years - with little in the way of critical approval or financial gain (in 2014 on my second Dutch tour, a young musician asked how you keep playing under such conditions: “Well, bud, it helps if you’re not good at anything else.”). Anyway …
I read down through the notification until I found how to “Opt Out” of the Pledges thang, and have since done so (it was going be automatically slipped in somewhere in or around the blagh, which would have been like opening your front door and finding a panhandler reading your morning paper). Well, that would have been a weasely thing to do, and while I may be a weasel to some, at least I’m your weasel. Okay.
So, if you happen to see or receive anything about Pledges, kindly disregard. We’ll all be better off for it.
